Varied Bunting, Big Bend, Texas

The Varied Bunting is a bird of open desert and scrub in the extreme southwestern parts of the US. They are not common or easy to photograph since bright sunlight is required to bring out the reds, blues and purples that look different at different angles. From a distance they actually appear black. As with the Painted Bunting we saw this fellow in April when he was establishing his territory in Big Bend. We first saw him at a far away tree and then luckily he flew to a nearby shrub. Here he is singing away:   (Click).
