A fairly common and stunning Hawaiian honeycreeper. However, being a nectar feeder they are very challenging to photograph since they rarely sit still. Luckily I got enough looks to get a nice shot. As with all the endemics, avian malaria is a threat at altitudes below 3000 ft where mosquitos can survive. Introduced species are immune to avian malaria but the endemics are not. Unfortunately, global warming will likely allow mosquitos to live at even higher altitudes severely threatening all of the native species in Hawaii (Click).
