Magnificent emerald-green giant of a broadbill, with distinctive black mottling and streaking. Males have black streaking on the underparts which females lack. A specialty of Borneo’s central highlands, where it can be found in montane forest with extensive tall pristine growth. This is the first bird we saw on tour. We saw him at this fruiting tree within 5 minutes of arriving at Mount Kinabalu National Park! This actually was not part of our tour itinerary but Liew took us 2 hours out of the way to get many endemics on our first day in Borneo. Initially this was going to be a rest day but was well worth it!
Even in a green forest, the irridescent green of this fellow was something to see. Liew brought his 500 mm F4 lense which when paired with our cameras and tripod was perfect to get a closeup show in low light conditions.
