With so many amazing birds in Borneo, its difficult to call one the bird of the trip. Our guide Liew felt this was it. This secretive pheasant-like cuckoo that is more often heard than seen. There are only 3 ground cuckoo species in the world. Forages on the ground, often following ant swarms or Bornean bearded pigs as they flush out potential prey. Favors pristine lowland rainforests, particularly in riverine or swampy areas.

We got really lucky to get a good look. Liew was able to attract one with a call. Then multiple birds started calling to one another. Three in total. We finally got this wide open look of a rare full body shot. He is beautiful when seen well: iridescent purple-green wings, long dark tail, finely barred underparts, black head, and pale blue-green face and bill.
