'I'iwi, Puu Oo Trail, Big Island, Hawaii

Often considered the prettiest of the Hawaiian endemics, 'I'iwi fills the niche of hummingbirds in Hawaii. I was amazed to see multiple 'I'iwi at eye level. From 1900, the lobelioid flower population favored by the 'I'iwi declined dramatically, and 'I'iwi shifted to nectar from Lehua blossoms. They are still fairly common above 3000 feet where mosquitos with avian malaria can't get them.
