In December 2014, I went on a five day trip to the Duluth, MN area to try my luck at photographing Great Gray and Snowy Owls while Gowri and Aditya went to India to visit her parents during winter break. A third owl that is commony seen in the area is the Northern Hawk Owl. In most years, this is the easiest owl to see in the area but in 2014, Great Gray and Snowy turned out to be more common than this fellow. My guide Michael Hendrickson had heard that there was one hanging around near a horse stable in Duluth. We went by and couldn't find it. We went back another day and scanned the countness trees in the area and I managed to spot this guy before Michael which was a first for me. Once we located him, we waited an surely he eventually made his way over to a perch that was close enough to get a nice photo. Here is a high resolution shot of this impressive predator:   (Hi-Res).
