Hooded Pitta, Kinabatungan River, Borneo

Unlike other pittas, Hooded Pittas can be seen more in the open. It can still be tricky to see them but we found a very cooperative one who responded to Liew's call and we got great shots. It may be because this pitta was nesting as seen by the nesting material in his mounth. This is a dark-headed beauty of tropical forests. Black head with body in emerald green with a bright blue patch on the shoulder and a crimson belly. It quietly forages singly for invertebrates on the ground. Like almost all pittas, shy and retiring and generally very difficult to see.

This beauty has all three primary colors, red, green and blue in abundance.

Getting the trunk in the background made for better contrast.
