Painted Redstart, Gila Wilderness, New Mexico

One of the Southwestern speciality warblers, the beautfiul painted redstart often forages high. However, in the spring he can be seen down low while singing to protect his territory. Here I saw him near Emory Pass in the Gila wilderness (Click). I also saw them in Portal during the nesting season. They place their nests on the ground and that is another opportunity to get a good look. Here the male is bringing food to the nest flashing his trademark tail (Click).
