Bristlecone pines are the longest living life form on earth. Some of them, the ones in California, are 3000 years old! At Mount Evans they are 2000 years old. The key to their success is that they grow in a very harsh environmental right below the tree line where very few other trees can compete. They live in cold temperatures where fewer diseases exist. In these high-elevation environments they grow very slowly leading to very dense wood making them resistant to insects, fungi, and rot.
