Day 8: Santiago, Rabida and Pinzon Islands

On the third day, we started out at the beautiful black sand beach on Santiago Island. The volcanic rocks over time were turned into this fine black sand.

This funny rock formation has been given the name Darwin's toilet. When the tide comes in this formation fills with water and then drains just like a toilet!

Here I could come face to face with this huge Marine Iguana who has a bit of color on him compared to the ones we had seen previously.

Next we made our way to the unusual red sand beaches of Rabida.

This Lava heron was fishing off the lava rocks.

I got a chance to snorkel in the red sand. This Parrot fish really stood out against the red sand.

We were told to be careful about bull sealions that often control sections of beach on the various islands and can sometime become aggressive. Here this bull doesn't seem to mind Gowri hanging out on his beach. Her T-shirt seems to be her response to the warning from staying away for this fellow! We joked that he seemed to want her to join his harem.

We got an upclose look of the comical Blue-footed Booby. You can really see his bright blue feet against the red sand of Rabida. I almost dropped our Canon Rebel camera in the water at this point in my excitement at seeing this famous fellow. That would have been a disaster.

We next made our way to Pinzon where all of us could just wade into the water and see Sting Rays.

I also managed to swim with the Sea lions here. It is amazing to see how elegant and fast they are. It is amazing anything can catch them.

Multicolored beaches and amazing wildlife wrapped up day 3 of our cruise. By this time the food on the cruise was really getting to us. Since we are all vegetarian we were being given pasta or rice day after day. Somehow, even simple pasta and rice came out tasting terrible. The "chef" also seemed to be very fond of food coloring so we would get some food that was bright green or purple. We once got bright neon green rice. Another day, it was a birthday celebration for one of our fellow tourists. The "chef" made cake that looked good but then tasted horrible. It is definitely the worst food we had ever had and in hindsight I should have taken a few pictures of colored dishes we were served since they were memorable in their own way. The non-vegetarians did not fare much better. We figured the reasonable price of the cruise finally caught up to us with regard to the food and the expertise of the guide. Luckily, the itinerary and the Galapagos were fantastic so we could put put with these shortcomings. After Pinzon, we headed to the most developed island in the Galapagos, Santa Cruz and the city of Puerto Ayora. Puerto Ayora actually has restaurants and I couldn't wait to get some pizza. Gowri was ready to swim to shore to get her hands on the French Fries. I got my pizza but Gowri failed on the fries (they didn't have any!). Nonetheless, food off the ship was much welcomed.
