Crocodile, Masai Mara, Kenya (6/2017)

Nile crocodile are fairly common along the Mara River. During the wildebeest migration they gather in large numbers to catch wildebeest as they cross the river. We saw several crossings but the water level was low preventing crocodiles from catching the wildebeest. They rely on drowning the wildebeest which requires the river to be running at higher level. This crocodile was seen right outside our hotel room at the Fairmont Mara lodge in the convervancy. He had his eye on the baby hippos that lay on this sandbank. The hippos went into the water upon his arrival and the adult hippos eventually chased him off. Here he is opening his mouth to cool off.
