I have always wanted to see the Great Apes in nature. I got my chance to see my first one in Borneo. We gave ourselves 3 days at the Kinabatungan River, a place to see Orangutans, but did not see any there. Luckily before we got to Kinabatugan we saw this beautiful wild mature male at the Rainforest Discovery Center. He was with a female and tiny baby. Unfortunately they stayed out of view. Aditya managed to get this nice shot framed between two huge trees using his Canon EOS R 100-500 mm lens. He was quite high up. Bornean orangutan populations have declined by more than 50% over the past 60 years, and the species' habitat has been reduced by at least 55% over the past 20 years.
I was able to get a closer view with my 600 mm attached to the crop sensor Canon 80D.
Aditya named him Fred. Here is Fred eating leaves before he will make his nest to sleep for the night. It was an amazing sight.
